The North of Thailand – Culture, Nature, and Unforgettable Experiences

ree

The north of Thailand offers a perfect mix of cultural highlights, impressive nature, and a relaxed atmosphere. Our trip took us to Chiang Mai with its numerous temples and the charming town of Pai. We've heard a lot of positive things about Chiang Rai - a place that belongs on our bucket list with its unique temples and scenic highlights. Each of these places impressed us in its way and we can't wait to show you our highlights and tips for this magical region.

Chiang Mai

Temple in Chiang Mai

Located in the north of the country, it is quieter than Bangkok and offers a wealth of cultural and natural experiences (we would have liked to stay longer here and see more of the surrounding area).

Temple, temple, temple...

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep – The famous temple with an incredible view over the city.

The temple has a lot of stairs - to be precise, 306 steps lead to the temple on the mountain. Don't forget to dress appropriately, otherwise, 306 steps will easily become twice as many :D Alternatively, there is also a cable car that takes you to the top. The entrance fee for the temple is around 30 Baht (approx. 0.80 Euro) for international visitors. If you want to use the cable car, this costs an additional 50 Baht (approx. 1.30 Euro) for a return trip.

Temple in Chiang Mai

We happened to pass by here in the evening. This temple is known for its Lanna architecture and the impressive golden Buddha statue.

This "tunnel temple" is located on the outskirts of Chiang Mai in the middle of a quiet forest. With its meditative atmosphere, we wanted to stay here all day.

Wat Pha Lat (TnB-Tip)

Our favorite! Hidden in the jungle with small waterfalls. Less crowded, stunningly beautiful & with a great view of Chiang Mai.

old town of Chiang Mai

Old Town of Chiang Mai – Discover ancient temples like Wat Chedi Luang and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the north.

Night Market – Perfect for trying street food and buying souvenirs. One of the most popular is the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar . This night market is famous for its wide range of souvenirs, handicrafts, clothing, and street food. Another well-known market is the Saturday Night Market on Wualai Road and the Sunday Walking Street on Ratchadamnoen Road.

TnB-request: Please do not visit elephant sanctuaries and find out in advance whether it is species-appropriate - we are honest: in our opinion, there are none that offer this. Wild animals should not be washed, stroked, or taken for walks with people. Such activities are unnatural and usually do not promote species-appropriate treatment. Keep wildlife wild!

TnB-Tip: On the way to Pai - the Sticky Waterfalls take along!

Pai

Pai Canyon - Sunset

A hippie paradise in northern Thailand Pai is a small, charming town that impresses with its relaxed atmosphere and breathtaking landscape:

Pai Canyon – An impressive gorge that is a particular highlight at sunset.

Pai Walking Street – In the evening, the street turns into a colorful market. Sit in a cozy bar and enjoy the hustle and bustle.

ree

Nam Lod Cave (if you have time) - Nam Lod Cave in Mae Hong Son, Thailand, is an impressive stalactite cave through which the Lang River flows, and visitors can explore parts of the cave by bamboo raft. Thousands of bats and swallows populate the cave, making for an impressive natural spectacle. Guided tours are required as the cave is not lit. We paid €11.70 per person (450 Baht).

Big Buddha – A giant Buddha statue that towers over Pai and offers fantastic views.

Relaxing in the Hot Springs

Hot Springs (Sai Ngam Natural Mineral Spring) – Hot springs in the middle of nature are ideal for relaxation.

(TnB-Tip: go there very early in the morning, then you save the entrance fee and there are fewer people there | Entrance fee 400 Baht = approx. 11€ per person)

Bamboo Bridge (Kho Ku So) - The Bamboo Bridge near Pai, an 800-meter-long, picturesque bridge over green rice fields, leads to a remote Buddhist temple and offers fantastic views. It is a highlight, especially in the rainy season. While there is a small fee at the main entrance, you can access the bridge for free from the other side (TnB-Tip: just drive past the main entrance).

Chiang Rai

Even though we unfortunately didn't make it this time, Chiang Rai is still on our bucket list. But we have already researched a few spots for you (no guarantees):

Highlights

  • White Temple (Wat Rong Khun): This iconic temple is known for its extraordinary modern architecture, which is decorated in brilliant white. Artist Chalermchai Kositpipat designed the temple to symbolize purity and enlightenment. A must-see for any Chiang Rai trip!

  • Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten): The lesser-known Blue Temple impresses with its bright blue tones and artistic decorations. It is a place of tranquility and offers many photo opportunities.

  • Black House (Baan Dam Museum): Thawan Duchanee's "Black House" is a hybrid art museum and spiritual retreat that stands in stark contrast to the White Temple. It displays impressive sculptures and artworks and provides insights into Thai mythology.

  • Golden Triangle: A historic and scenic point where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet, a visit to the Golden Triangle offers fascinating insights into the region's history as well as beautiful views.

Hidden Gems

  • Singha Park: Located a little outside the city, this huge park features tea plantations, lakes, and hiking trails. Particularly popular with locals, it is perfect for a relaxing day in nature.

  • Phu Chi Fa: A mountain perfect for hiking and sunrise viewing. The breathtaking view over the sea of mist at sunrise is a real hidden gem and is overlooked by most tourists.

  • Doi Mae Salong: A small village in the mountains known for its tea plantations. The region is strongly influenced by Chinese culture and offers a unique mix of Thai and Chinese traditions.
