Cambodia – A country full of contrasts and history

ree

Our trip through Cambodia was characterized by impressive temples, moving history, and a mixture of fascinating and less recommendable places. Here we would like to share our experiences and tips with you to inspire your own trip to Cambodia.

Table of contents

**Please note that the information shared here is based on our experiences. Prices, opening times, and offers are subject to change, and experiences are often weather or seasonal-dependent. Be sure to check up-to-date information directly with operators to plan your travel experience.

Siem Reap – The magical temple complex Angkor Wat

Our first stop was Siem Reap, the city known for the famous Angkor Wat temple complex. This is not only the highlight of the city, but also probably the most famous landmark in Cambodia.

Highlights in Siem Reap

  • Plan at least a whole day for the temple complex. (There are also 3-day tours - in our opinion, one day is enough)

  • Tickets are available online

  • Sunrise: An unforgettable experience, but get there early to secure a good spot.

  • TnB-Tip: Rent a bike or scooter to explore the area on your own.

  • A workshop where you can experience traditional craftsmanship. Here you can see how local artists create products such as silk, ceramics, and wood carvings.

  • Perfect for an evening drink and experiencing Siem Reap's nightlife.

TnB-Tip for food: Visit the lovely Champey - she has super delicious street food and she is a kind-hearted person.

Sihanoukville – Less recommended

Sihanoukville

After Siem Reap, we went on to Sihanoukville. Unfortunately, we can't recommend this place. The city is overcrowded, dominated by construction sites, and has lost its former charm. However, many travelers use it as a starting point to reach the islands of Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem.

Koh Rong Tips without guarantee

Since we unfortunately were not in Koh Rong ourselves (due to illness), we got tips from other travelers:

  • Dream beaches: Koh Rong is known for white sandy beaches such as Long Beach or Coconut Beach.

  • Activities: Snorkeling, diving, and kayaking are often offered.

  • Accommodation: There are both simple bungalows and luxurious resorts.

TnB-Tip: Plan enough time, as the ferry crossing is often weather-dependent.

Phnom Penh – The moving capital

Our last stop was Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. The city combines vibrant life with a shocking past.

Highlights in Phnom Penh

  • A harrowing but important place to better understand the dark history of Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge regime.

  • The tour is well done and offers insights into the gruesome crimes of that time.

  • This place is one of the most famous memorials of the Khmer Rouge regime.

  • It is a shocking experience that highlights the extent of the atrocities that took place at that time.

  • The audio tour provides moving insights into the history of the Killing Fields.

  • The magnificent Royal Palace with its famous Silver Pagoda is an architectural highlight.

  • A lively market, ideal for souvenirs, clothing, and local snacks.

  • Bassac Street, also known as Street 308, is one of the most popular nightlife districts in Phnom Penh.

  • Here you will find a wide selection of chic bars, restaurants, and cafés, perfect for ending the day.

  • TnB-Tip: Be sure to try a cocktail at the Samai Distillery, where Cambodia's famous rum is produced, or enjoy the relaxed atmosphere at Piccolo Italia da Luigi for delicious pizza.

  • The street has a modern, international flair, but remains charmingly Cambodian.

To sum it up

Cambodia impressed us deeply with its history and culture. While Siem Reap and Phnom Penh were our personal favorites, we would plan Sihanoukville and the islands differently next time. The highlights of Angkor Wat, the moving impressions of the Genocide Museum, and the warm hospitality of the people make this country an unforgettable travel destination, but it was still not "our" country.
